The gap between actual and potential
Production deferment is the gap between what an asset is technically capable of producing and what it actually produces, after accounting for planned and unplanned losses. It sounds like a simple number to track. In practice, it is one of the easiest metrics to get quietly wrong.
The reason is structural, not technical. Deferment causes tend to sit in different systems, owned by different teams. A choke restriction sits with production engineering. A compressor trip sits with maintenance. A pipeline constraint sits with operations. A planned shutdown sits with the project team. Each team can usually explain its own piece. Almost nobody is positioned to add them up consistently, week after week.
Why this matters more than it looks like it should
A few percentage points of unaccounted deferment, compounded over a year, is rarely a rounding error. It is often the single largest addressable production opportunity an asset has — larger than most well intervention or workover candidates, and considerably cheaper to capture, because the barrels were never lost to the reservoir. They were lost to process, equipment or reporting.
The complication is that deferment which isn't consistently tracked doesn't disappear from a report. It just gets folded into "natural decline," where it becomes invisible to anyone reviewing performance at a distance.
What a more disciplined view looks like
Closing this gap is less about new technology and more about consistent structure: a single, agreed deferment taxonomy across production, operations and maintenance; a cadence for reconciling causes against the production shortfall, not just recording that a shortfall occurred; and enough operational data — flow, pressure, equipment status — flowing into one place that the reconciliation doesn't depend on someone's memory of what happened three weeks ago.
