What Indigenous Operators Are Inheriting From Divested Assets

The steady transfer of onshore and shallow-water assets from international majors to indigenous operators has changed who is responsible for a large share of Nigeria's producing infrastructure. It has also changed what "operational readiness" needs to mean.

An asset transfer is not a clean handover

Divested assets typically arrive with infrastructure built and maintained under a different operating philosophy, different capital intensity, and often a different generation of technology standards than the acquiring operator will run going forward. Documentation quality varies. Legacy equipment may be well past its original design life, even where it remains technically serviceable. None of this makes the asset unworkable โ€” but it does mean operational readiness has to be established freshly, not assumed from the prior operator's track record.

The three gaps that tend to surface first

In practice, three gaps recur across divested assets: a data gap, where historical production, maintenance and integrity records are incomplete or fragmented across systems that don't talk to each other; a reliability gap, where equipment reliability under the new operator's maintenance regime hasn't yet been established, only inherited; and a visibility gap, where field operations that were previously managed with a larger technical bench now need to run leaner without losing situational awareness.

Why this is a capability question, not a scale question

Closing these gaps is not primarily about matching the previous operator's headcount or capital spend. It's about building the specific capability that a leaner operating model actually needs: engineering assessment to establish the asset's real current condition, a maintenance and reliability programme built for the asset as it exists today, and enough operational visibility that a smaller team isn't flying blind.

Where this connects to activation work

This is closely related to, but distinct from, greenfield development. Our Asset Development & Activation solution applies the same underlying logic โ€” assess the asset's real condition, then plan around that reality โ€” whether the asset is a new discovery or one that has simply changed hands.
