A near-term opportunity, not a distant one
Flaring reduction and gas utilisation don't require new generation technology, long capital cycles, or a shift in core business model. They require better measurement, better monitoring, and often better commercial and infrastructure decisions about gas that is already being produced alongside oil. This makes it one of the few transition-adjacent opportunities that is genuinely actionable within a normal operating and investment cycle, rather than a multi-decade horizon.
Why measurement comes before optimisation
A recurring pattern across operators of different sizes is that flare and gas utilisation figures are estimated rather than measured consistently — reasonable for regulatory reporting, but not precise enough to support a real optimisation or monetisation decision. Before an operator can make a defensible case for a gas capture, reinjection or utilisation investment, it needs measurement consistent enough to know how much gas is actually available, when, and at what quality.
Where this overlaps with production and efficiency work
Gas utilisation performance rarely improves in isolation. It tends to move together with broader production and operational efficiency work, because the same connected monitoring and Operational Intelligence capability that improves production visibility also improves flare and gas measurement. Treating them as separate initiatives usually means duplicating monitoring infrastructure that could have served both.
