Asset Integrity and Reliability Are Not the Same Discipline

Integrity and reliability get bundled together so often that it's worth being precise about the difference — because they answer different questions, and confusing them leaves gaps in both.

Two different questions

Asset integrity asks: is this equipment safe and fit to operate, against a defined standard? It is fundamentally a compliance and risk question, answered through inspection, condition assessment and adherence to code. Reliability asks a different question: how often is this equipment likely to fail, and what does that failure cost in production, safety or repair? It is a performance and probability question, answered through failure history, maintenance strategy and, increasingly, condition data.

An asset can pass every integrity inspection and still have a poor reliability record — failing in ways that are safe but expensive. Equally, an asset can have a strong short-term reliability record while carrying an integrity risk that hasn't yet manifested as a failure.

Where this distinction gets lost

In practice, the two disciplines often report through the same team, use overlapping data, and get discussed in the same maintenance meeting — which makes it easy to treat "we did an inspection" as though it also answers the reliability question, or "we haven't had a failure" as though it also answers the integrity question. Neither follows from the other.

Why the bridge to Operational Intelligence matters here

Both disciplines improve significantly once condition and performance data is being captured consistently rather than episodically. Integrity assessment becomes more targeted when it's informed by real operating history, not just a fixed inspection interval. Reliability engineering becomes predictive rather than reactive once failure patterns can be seen developing in the data, rather than discovered after the fact.

A practical starting point

Before introducing new technology, it's worth asking a simpler question first: for this asset, do we actually know the difference between our integrity position and our reliability position? If the honest answer is "not clearly," that's usually the higher-value place to start.
